A familiar group name can conceal large differences. A whale shark photograph should not become a description of every shark.
Understand the context
NOAA Fisheries discusses differences between shark species and the marine environments they use. Climate-related effects also vary with species and region. One behaviour or one future scenario cannot be presented as a universal account of sharks.
Try a learning activity
- Create a card for the species actually shown.
- Separate its sourced traits from claims about the wider group.
- Record whether the photograph was taken in an aquarium.
- Write two questions that need species-specific evidence.
Reflect on the evidence
Compare your record with the source. Which details did you observe directly, which did you learn from the reading, and which remain uncertain? Keep those answers separate. Add the place, date and method when they are known; a short observation or a single photograph does not describe an entire landscape.
