Sea turtles: why dark beaches matter

A coastal light can seem small to a person while changing the surroundings used by nesting turtles. Habitat comes before the wish to see an animal closely.

Understand the context

NOAA Fisheries explains that artificial coastal lighting can disorient nesting adults and hatchlings of the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta. Coastal development and entanglement in fishing gear are also discussed. A photograph does not establish the condition of an entire nesting beach.

Try a learning activity

  2. Mark questions about the direction and reach of light.
  3. Compare two layouts without proposing changes to a real beach.
  4. Write a visitor checklist based on the relevant local guidance.
